Feathers, feathers, feathers

May 14th, 2012

No, I am not ignoring you. I have two cakes due out this weekend.

The first being an angel food cake with a ruffle whipped cream icing and chocolate covered strawberries on top.

The second being a wedding for a local business couple. It is a three-tier cake, each layer being 4 layers thick, and covered in a cascade of edible feathers. The wedding also has 75 cupcakes with two feathers on each cupcake.

Now, the issue is that there is no template or pre-cut feathers out there.

I am cutting each of these feathers out by hand in different sizes.

Next, I have to splice the feathers, meaning I give them the slits that make them feather.

Next, I have t add any wires that are needed for the bigger ones.

Last, I have to paint each feather front and back with a colored dust.

This takes a lot of time, which leaves me no time for blogging. If I get a spare moment I get blog about a few things I have in the works.

Otherwise, I will see you at the end of the week.

May 13th, 2012
I think my oldest and I are the only oatmeal eaters in our house. When we eat oatmeal it is int instant kind.

So, when I saw this on the 4 weeks to fill your freezer series I thought why not try it.

Homemade Poptarts

May 12th, 2012
I decided last weekend to make some homemade Poptarts! They are or were a hit, not sure how many have survived the week.

This was simple but does require a bit of pie crusts. You can use the store bought pie crusts but I use Vegan Pie Crust Recipe. Trust me there is no taste difference, last Thanksgiving my family could not tell the difference!

This vegan version is amazing!
Ingredients
  • 2 cups Flour
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 cup Canola Oil
  • 5-8 Tablespoons Water
  • Jams/Jellies/Preserves
Instructions
  1. Mix flour and salt together
  2. Make a well and pour in the oil.
  3. Start to mix, I use my clean hands as they are the best tool I have.
  4. Add in the water a bit at a time.
  5. Mix to it completely mixed together. It will be a bit doughy. This is off as you flour to roll it out you will add the right amount of flour.
  6. Roll out making is 1/8″ thick.
  7. Cut into squares or use a cut-n-seal to make your bottom/tops.
  8. Spread preserves or jam in a spoonful amount onto on side.
  9. If you made a square fold over the other side and crimp edges with a fork or if you used a cut-n-seal press the tool into both layers.
  10. Put on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes until they begin to get golden.
Notes

This recipe makes one 9″ amount of dough.
You should only really roll out the dough once. Re-rolling dough makes it tough and not the best.

Homemade Baking Mix

May 11th, 2012
I wasn’t really sure why this was on the 4 weeks to fill your freezer, Breakfast week….. but I did it!

I am guessing that this baking mix will come to helpful use in the coming weeks.

The date is written on the bottom, being a chef …… everything gets a date on it.

Little touch

May 9th, 2012

A little touch to something small in a room can go a long way!

I found this on Pintierest and had to try it!

I thought it would be a cool idea and I would try it out in the master bath to see if I really liked it.

I LOVED it! Today I am doing 4 other rooms!

I am not going to rewrite how to do this as I just did what she said to the tee. It would be silly to rewrite it here and I didn’t take pictures as I did this.

You can find the tutorial here.

I will show you what mine looked like when I finished.

When I went to Culinary this became my pattern. I bought duck tape with it, I did a chocolate transfer like it, I bought this fabric for a notebook cover, and I have made a bulletin board using this fabric.

My master bathroom is simple in it is two neutral colors and very little going on. This added just enough pop to make you go WOW!

I am doing the last cover in that bathroom and doing the same fabric in my master bedroom. I have the fabric picked and pulled out of my stash for the kitchen, living room, and the upstairs bathroom. I will be working on them today and will post them tomorrow.

Pinterest….why?

I did not make this! I found it on Pinterest. You can find the original link here!

Old Desk get a New Life!

May 8th, 2012

A friend from high school, Dianna, is moving to North Carolina and was cleaning out her basement last weekend. She had two desks she wanted to get rid of and asked her friends on Facebook if anyone wanted one. I said I did and in a few days she was dropping them off at my house.

Now what do I do with it? They needed a little TLC. I took the one with the wood as my own and gave the other to my 8-year-old. He was thrilled and when he sees mine I know I will be doing this again tomorrow!

I started by taking off the only part I could, the desk top.

I laid it to the side to deal with it later!

Next I took and I sanded the wood parts of the chair. I wanted to smooth out any rough edges and pieces.

Next, because my husband paints cars I masked and taped off the wood parts of the chair. I used a trash bag cut open to cover the big parts.

Next, I used spray paint I already had in the shed to paint the metal parts. I used this black metal interior spray paint by Valspar! It has sparkles in it!!

I applied one coat and let it dry.

I followed with another coat and than once it was dry I flipped it over to spray the bottom.

I sprayed again two coats and letting it dry!

I went inside to work on my desk top. I know I want to add things about my trip to Yellowstone last year. This was an adventure that changed my life. But that is another story all together.

I gather the maps and stickers and postcards and I laid them out how I thought I wanted everything.

I used Mod Podge to put everything down and once everything was down I Mod Podged it again. As it was sticky I sprinkled some tiny metallic  stars on top.

I took this outside to finish drying in the sun.

By this time my metal parts were dry and I took off the plastic and the tape. It looks good!

Now I want to make the wood pop a bit. I didn’t want to take away from the fact it is old and been used. I wanted to keep things like the “HI” someone carved into the wood.

I used an Olympic wood stain, in Special Walnut. And yes, it only cost me $0.25 and it was waiting for a purpose in my shed. I ragged on the stain and wiped it off.

I am getting ready to put everything back together here in a minute………

There it is in its spot of glory!

I am very proud of myself. I love it!

I am very sorry I have MIA for the last few days. Lots of baking and cupcakes for staff appreciation at my kids schools.

It is all a part of this!
